A week ago Nokia had promised to bring forth 2 new Nseries models and today it has fulfilled its promise launching N85 and N79. N85 is set to replace N81. N85 has upgraded from the 2mp camera of N81 to 5mp and added GPS both for mapping and for geotagging shots. Also it has switched to a 2.6-inch AMOLED screen that should supply richer color and as much as 28 hours of music playback on a single charge.

As for N79, it will probably take place of N78 with its 5mp camera and dual-LED based flash to replacing 3.2mp camera of N78. Other features include GPS, 4GB micro SDHC storage, WiFi, swappable back covers, and a 24-hour music playback battery life. Both of these phones will be released soon most probably next month.

Be it television or disc (CD, DVD, Blu-ray) players and a lot of other products, Samsung has always been one such player in the market that has tried to in corporate the latest of technology in their products. The fact that Samsung was one of the very few companies who supported the Blu-ray format since its inception proves the point. It is the same case with the portable players. Samsung has lived upto its reputation, as they come up with portable players that include more and more features every time. Loaded with a few features more is the Samsung P2.

Samsung this time, seems to have understood the need of the hour and exactly what the consumers want. Style and utility in the same package, that’s what you get in P2. The black piece we received was style and sleekness personified. No cluster of tactile buttons anywhere (except for the ‘On’I'Off’ and ‘Hold’ buttons on the side), which results in a bigger screen. The only hiccup was that the black finish easily picked up our fingerprints. So if you are fussy enough then it would lead to an addition of 100 bucks in the total deal (for gloves which you will have to pick up).

We have already let out the secret that the P2 does not have any tactile buttons, which means that P2 comes with a touchscreen. You may ask, "what is so great?", as a lot of other players come with touchscreens too. A valid query, but what most of these other players lack is the sensitivity and speed of the touchscreen. Especially when the players have an animated

GUI (Graphical User Interface). each time you touch a button it becomes really difficult to wait for the animation to get over before you can proceed to the next step. Well that won’t be a problem here as the animation stops as soon as you touch the screen to move on. One more advantage is the relative bigger screen. What’s worth mentioning is the Bluetooth that enables you to hook the P2 to any Bluetooth enabled device to use the P2 either as the source or the receiver.

With P2 as the source, you can couple it with a Bluetooth activated headset, while as the receiver you can connect the P2 to a mobile phone and use the P2’s inbuilt microphone or alternate with its headphones. Just like a lot of other players from samsung, the P2 also comes with 4GB and BGB storage options along with other features like the FM radio, voice recording, text compatibility. Also the P2 works with the samsung Media software just as any other media player from samsung.

The 2008 Ramadan offering from Nokia includes the Holy Quran, which allows users to read, search, bookmark and listen to Quran recitation.

Other elements include Emsakya, Ramadaniat and Mozzaker.

Developed by ASGATech, the only Forum Nokia Premium Partner in the Middle East, all content of the Ramadan applications has been reviewed and approved by Al Azhar Al Shareef.

Building on Nokia’s existing Maps platform, the new mobile services also feature locations of major mosques in Saudi Arabia, such as the two holy mosques, Masjid Al Haram in Makkah and Masjid Al Nabawi in Al Madinah.

Additionally users can also navigate locations of major mosques in UAE, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, and Pakistan using the Nokia Maps service.

Sony Ericsson phone owners looking for a place to download digital content for their devices need not look any further than the newly launched Sony Ericsson PlayNow Arena. It’s like SE’s version of Nokia’s own download service, except that it’s suited for Sony Ericsson’s taste.

Actually, PlayNow Arena is a long-awaited revision of its online music store called PlayNow. It will first debut in Nordic countries offering customers games, songs, and other digital content.

Initially, Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow Arena will come with 1 million tracks from major labels which are Sony BMG, Warner Music, and EMI. Eventually, SE plans to offer 5 million tracks to customers and further expand the service to other European countries until it goes full-scale in 2009.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that the music tracks will cost about $1.43 a piece, which is a bit pricier than what is offered by other digital music download services like iTunes (which sells songs for 99 cents each), but then again you won’t be able to play those tracks on a Sony Ericsson phone anyway.

Sony Ericsson content boss Martin Blomkvist doesn’t seem all too happy about this move, commenting that the sale of digital music will not make their company any richer. Well, if what they say is right and what you get is what you deserve, then it’s up to Sony Ericsson to actually make this new download service work.

Motorola has released its next generation Push-To-Talk over Cellular (PoC) solution, optimized for CDMA 1x networks equipped with EVDO Rev A data capability. This solution leverages the improved performance capabilities provided by the CDMA 1x EVDO Rev A standard including higher speed data rates, low call set-up time latency and quality of service (QoS).

Motorola’s end-to-end Push-To-Talk over Cellular solution provides walkie-talkie like capability to mobile devices equipped with special PoC client software, connecting people to those they communicate with most. With the push of a button on their PoC-enabled handsets, both enterprise and personal users can connect directly with individuals or groups and quickly share information.

Motorola’s next generation PoC solution provides competitive call set-up time performance with other PoC and proprietary solutions, “buddy list” availability, an open ecosystem to support a wide variety of mobile devices from multiple manufacturers equipped with the PoC client and access to the Internet to enable “push-to-X” features and services to complement basic PoC.

LG isn’t going to sit idly by as Apple continues to trounce its stylish LG Prada with the upcoming launch of the next-generation 3G iPhone. Having seen sales of the original LG Prada eaten up by the iPhone, LG has apparently gotten back into the mix with a successor to the LG Prada couture handset.

The LG Prada II, as it’s so creatively called, is purportedly slated for launch in 4Q 2008. Packed with a quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM radio, dual-band (900/2100Mhz) WCDMA with 7.2Mbps HSDPA speeds, 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen display, 5 megapixel camera (with front-facing video-call camera), WiFi (b/g), Bluetooth, TV-out, FM radio, and microSD card slot, the LG Prada II is sure to please. And, updating the original LG Prada’s touchscreen-only design, LG has decided to fit the LG Prada II with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Now that’s a spec sheet that we can really get behind! With the 3G iPhone slated to launch ahead of the LG Prada II, it should be interesting to see how the new haute-handset from LG will fare.
