Microsoft In Mobius 2002

Last week, held Mobius 2002, its yearly get-together with people, including yours truly, who run or work for websites devoted to some aspect of computing. footed the bill to fly us to Redmond where we learned about the latest -related products and even received some samples (for example, each attendee was given a T- ).

This year’s Mobius covered a wide range of topics, from the latest handhelds to computer monitors you can detach and use anywhere in your house.
  2002
A major initiative coming from in the very near future is 2002, which is a version of the Win CE operating system specially redesigned for phones. Jonas Hasselberg, who is the product manager, gave a presentation on it at Mobius.
2002 should not be confused with Edition, which has been designed for handhelds that are similar to typical models except with capabilities. 2002 is for phones with extra features, like email and Internet access.

Probably the most obvious difference is in the screens. A running Edition will have a 320 by 240 pixel screen that is touch activated. A handset running 2002 will have a 220 by 176 pixel screen and have a joystick for user input. Also, handsets with 2002 will have a hard keypad, as opposed to a Edition’s virtual one.

Nevertheless, there is still some overlap in their capabilities, like the ability to access email and the Web, make calls, play games, and run other types of applications.

The Edition is for professionals, while the is for typical consumers and professionals who don’t want the full capabilities of the Edition.
Applications written for one of these won’t automatically run on the other but can be ported.
There are already some devices running the Edition, like the one from T- reviewed a few months ago, while the first handsets running 2002 are expected before the end of this year.
designed its platform to allow companies to make relatively inexpensive handsets. However, devices that run this will be capable of multitasking, playing advanced games, and multimedia. There is even a version of Windows Media Player for it.
A company called Digital Concepts was at Mobius 2002, showing off some games it had developed for 2002, like Bust ‘em, which is sort of like an advanced version of Breakout. Company representatives also demoed RocketElite, which is similar to the classic Lunar Lander, except people are shooting at while you are trying to land.
DAT Group was also at Mobius, showing off a system to allow companies to wirelessly sell and deliver applications to users running 2002. It also has a system to allow carriers to offer their customers the ability to personalize their 2002 handsets from their PCs via a website.
Mobius wasn’t just about 2002. There were also presentations on other topics.

2002 Update

took the opportunity to announce the third 2002 update. This includes Windows Media layer 8.5, which offers improved performance and playlist management, plus integration with the Connection Manager. The update also adds tab support to IE, a new default Today theme, and other bug fixes.
has shipped the update to its licensees and they will release it in the near future.
Anyone who has missed previous updates needn’t worry; this update also has all changes included in previous ones.
 ViewSonic V35

ViewSonic V35
David Feldman, a Senior Product Manager from ViewSonic, was at Mobius 2002 to demonstrate his company’s latest , the V35. This is a with a 300 MHz XScale processor, a 320 by 240 pixel screen, 32 MB of , and an slot.

It will go on sale in the United States later this year for $299. It will go on sale in Asia at the same time. ViewSonic will offer it in Europe early next year for about 300 euros.

Mr. Feldman said the target market for this was users who want the familiar Windows graphical user interface. It might seem like a bit of a jump for a company known for its computer monitors to be releasing a but Mr. Feldman explained by saying his company considers the screen to be the most important part of a and screens are something ViewSonic is expert on.This won’t be the company’s only model. According to Mr. Feldman, ViewSonic will release a full range of handhelds, including high-end models and ones with access.

Tablet

Tablet PC in Base Station
Mobius wasn’t restricted to just handhelds. There were presentations on all types of devices related to computing. One of the most interesting of these is the Tablet , which is what hopes will be the next generation of the laptop.

Tablet PCs can take two forms. One is a typical tablet format, with an LCD screen that can be plugged into a base station. The other is essentially a small laptop with a rotating screen that can be reconfigured into a tablet shape.

These don’t use a touch screen; instead, they can detect the movements of a specific stylus. This is necessary because the user needs to be able to put his or her hand on the screen when writing, which isn’t practical with a touch screen

On the side of this is Windows XP Tablet Edition, which offers additional features to allow the Tablet to take handwritten input.
has created a system that is quite different from the typical ’s handwriting recognition system. Instead of translating each written character immediately into a type-written one, Tablet allows users to leave most of their material exactly as they entered it: handwritten. If the user chooses to convert handwritten notes into text that is possible but frequently it won’t be necessary.

Tablet PC
For example, a user can create a handwritten note in which the word “plastic” is used, then close it. Later, the user can do a search for the word “plastic” and the note will show up on the results list, even though it has never been converted to text.

Tablet does not try to adapt itself its user’s handwriting style. Instead, took handwriting samples from hundreds of thousands of people and created a system that is usable to people with average handwriting.
There is an application included with Tablet called the Journal that is primarily intended to deal with handwritten input. A window can be pulled up in other applications that allows handwriting to be converted to text. Though there have no official announcements, many companies are working to create versions of their applications to better support this handwriting system.
Chris Barry from , who did the presentation, said his company sees Tablet PCs being appropriate for anyone who needs to get work done away from their desk. This includes both people who have to go to meetings on the other side of the continent and those who have to go to meetings on the other side of the building.
There are quite a few companies that plan to release Tablet PCs, the first of which are expected early next month. Prices are expected to range between $2000 and $3000.

Smart Displays

For those who aren’t interested in carrying a whole computer around with them, ’s Megan Kidd talked about Smart Displays, which are computer monitors that can be carried around someone’s house while still wirelessly connected to a .
These are LCDs that can serve are a user’s regular monitor but can be detached and carried into another room and remain connected to the via an 802.11 connection. When disconnected, a Smart Display does not become a stand alone ; instead, it acts as if there was a very long cable between the monitor and your .

New Walkman Phone | Sony Ericsson W995

Sony-Ericsson W995 Walkman : Get a complete mobile entertainment experience with the Sony-Ericsson W995 Walkman and its optimised video playback style and performance. Debuting on the Sony-Ericsson W995 Walkman phone is Media Go which transfers, plays and organises your entertainment, in most file formats, to your phone simply and effortlessly. Keep amused like never before on one powerful video phone; watch news, TV shows or blockbusters in premium video quality or check out the latest videos from YouTube using Turbo 3G or Wi-Fi. Complete with an 8.1 megapixel camera and Walkman player, with clear audio experience, the W995 Walkman is the ultimate handset to keep you entertained when on the bus, lunch break or waiting for a train.
“With Media Go there’s no need to worry about format, resolution and ‘frame per second’ anymore.” said Alexandre Cardon, Global Marketing Business Manager at Sony Ericsson. “No longer will the video you transferred from your PC to your phone play in low resolution or bad quality. With Media Go and the Sony-Ericsson W995 music phone the experience is as good on your cell phone as it was on your Personal Computer.”

So it’s not totally clear to us why you’d wait for this thing over a C905 that you could buy today, but once again, that’s the confusion behind Sony Ericsson’s Cyber-shot / Walkman branding that they’re claiming they hope to clear up going forward — it’s just that the W995 isn’t really a step in that direction, and we weren’t huge fans of the chicklet-sized nav keys up front. That being said, it seems like a fine phone overall — the display looks crisp and vivid, the interface was relatively snappy, and there’s little to complain about having an 8.1 megapixel autofocus cam at your disposal. Click on for a quick shot at the UI in action!

Exciting & Exciting Mobile Service Introduce By Yahoo

Mobile World Congress 2009 is on so it is only fitting that after MySpace announced the launch of a new mobile site, here comes Yahoo as well.

Yahoo announced, you guessed it right, the upcoming launch of its new Yahoo Mobile, an app developed for the Apple iPhone, and as an app developed for smartphones from Nokia, RIM, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Motorola as well as those powered by Windows Mobile. Yahoo! Mobile initially will be available through a managed beta program, with general availability expected in Q2 2009.

We believe the new Yahoo Mobile will transform the way millions of mobile users around the world will interact with the Internet.

Users will be able to search editor-selected content, using new maps and tools, and consolidate a variety of content into one location. They will be able to access e-mail and social networking sites, as well as instant messaging, address books, and calendar tools.

The mobile Web and iPhone applications will provide search, buzz, and OneConnect, which will allow users to access e-mail from Yahoo, Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail, and AOL. It features Pulse for access to social networking sites, Yahoo Messenger, and Yahoo News, among other features.

The smartphone versions include all the same functionality plus Yahoo’s OneSearch with Voice, which will allow users to state what they’re looking for. It will also feature widgets and Opera Mini 4.2 for mobile browsing.

Sony Ericsson Introduces “Idou” 12.1 Megapixel Camera Phone

With the official start of the Mobile World Congress 2009 only hours away, Sony Ericsson announced its Idou smartphone at a press event in Barcelona. We sat down with a few Sony Ericsson execs to talk about the new smartphone, which will be the first device from Sony Ericsson to run on the new platform. The open-source Symbian Foundation OS is being built upon Nokia’s S60 user interface and the Symbian OS, and will look very much like the current Nokia S60 5th Edition that runs on the Nokia 5800 XpressMedia, if our sources are to believed.

Since the Idou is a prototype, and doesn’t even have an official name yet, we were unable to get video of the smartphone actually powered up. But we did get a chance to play around with the hardware enough to at least be able to imagine what is coming.

For being such early hardware, the Idou felt solidly built. We could see the 12.1 megapixel camera’s autofocus lens and Xenon flash, and the signage on the device told us that it will feature DLNA compatible WiFi and GPS as well. The display measures 3.5 inches across and is in a wide screen format, though we don’t know what the actual pixel resolution will be.

In terms of the look and feel of the user interface, we can expect it to be fairly true to the stock Symbian Foundation UI, which is expected to look much like S60 5th Edition. Sony Ericsson reps did say that we should expect to see the same kind of Sony Ericsson user experience type apps on the Idou as we see on Sony Ericsson’s feature phones and its Xperia X1, though there was no mention specifically of the Xperia panels, which we are not expecting.

We have been told that the full announcement for the Idou, which will contain its final name, full specs, and expected availability date, will come to us by early Summer of 2009. We’re looking forward to it. For now, enjoy the photos and the HD video we shot of the device.

Sony Ericsson Launches “Reese” As Facebook Phone

Sony Ericsson are rumoured to be on the verge of releasing a somewhat odd looking social network phone. The Sony Ericsson Reese (not sure if that’s the official name, or the prototype name) is a messaging phone designed for lots of text input, and so naturally comes with a full QWERTY keyboard.

There’s no question Sony Ericsson is under an enormous amount of pressure to release a relevant handset that appeals to the masses. If the alleged leaked advertisement of an upcoming handset you see before you is any indication of things to come however, Sony Ericsson might as well just call it a day. Codenamed “Reese”, it is purported to feature “a unique swivel design reveals a QWERTY keypad below the large portrait screen which allows you to view several messages of any one kind in high definition. It also comes with one-click access to your favorite networking sites. So now it’s never been easier to keep up with your mates.” Hmm, looks kind of familiar. It’s obviously too early to pin down an OS for this device but it is possible we could be looking at Windows Mobile a la the Xperia X1 or even Android. No matter which way SE slices it though, the Reese really doesn’t look all that appealing - especially next to the sheer beauty of Sony Ericsson’s first sliding QWERTY, the Xperia X1.

iMafia….. Social Game For iPhone

With their reliance on social networks and their ‘leftfield’ monetisation methods, the Mob would have felt right at home in the 21st Century world of Web 2.0..

Now PlayMesh is seeking to straddle the mobster/mobile 2.0 divide with iMafia, an innovative gangster game.

According to Venture Beat, iMafia takes the basic social gameplay of online titles like Mob Wars, leverages social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and adds a clever twist to enable PlayMesh to profit from a game given away for free on the App store.

It works like this: PlayMesh has produced several other iPhone games, such as Chess Puzzles, iType and Speed Shapes. Originally free, these are now being replaced by premium versions.

iMafia players who buy and play the developer’s other games can earn points in them to spend in the gangster game.

PlayMesh says it will open up its system to other developers, too, which could potentially create a shadow network of virtual cross-game payments in the iPhone ecosystem.

Quite what the Godfather, Apple, would make of that is an open question. The convoluted procedure is necessitated because Apple protects its 30 per cent cut by banning overt virtual goods models, in order to stop developers creating free apps and selling upgrades outside of the App store for 100 per cent of the profits.

First 3G HSDPA Wrist Phone | LG-GD910

LG representative showed us the company’s new GD910 touchscreen watch phone. Sporting features that even Dick Tracy and James Bond never had access to, the new GD910 tries to offer nearly full featured phone functionality inside a very compact wrist watch form factor.

A swipe gesture based touchscreen user interface allows users to move from screen to screen easily, and cool tech like HSDPA data, speech to text/text to speech, and a music player round out the relatively complete feature set. The GD910 supports both regular Bluetooth headsets as well as stereo Bluetooth headphones, and can even manage 3G video calls. The GD910’s touchscreen display measures 1.43" across the diagonal, and the entire device weighs only 85g.

Because of the demo model’s pre-production status, we were unable to show you some of the navigation and transition screen effects in the video below, but we can tell you that everything seemed to work quite speedily and smoothly.

LG has yet to reveal complete pricing and availability information for the GD910, but the company did hint that the device would likely show up in European markets first.
