Dell Introduces Two Pharos Smartphones Soon…

A false start on Dell’s website revealed the computer and monitor maker may soon get into the smartphone game as well with a pair of Pharos-branded smartphones, the Traveller 117 and 127. While the phones have disappeared since making their short-lived online debut, their specifications were revealed so we know what to expect if and when they do come to market. Manufactured by Inventec, the devices feature access to 7.2Mbps HSDPA networks, assisted GPS capabilities and Windows Mobile 6.1 with the Microsoft Office Mobile suite. Both also share a 2-megapixel camera along with a 0.3-megapixel front-facing unit for video calling. Differences include the full QWERTY keyboard of the Traveller 127 and the touchscreen of the 117. From the photos, it’s clear the 117 will also run the SPB Mobile Shell. The final piece of information pertains to battery life, with a talk time rating of four hours for each device, along with 200 hours of standby. No pricing or specific release information is known.

Hands On! iPAQ 910C

[HP – Berlin 2008] I got my hands on the HP iPaq 910c, that will ship on June 30th. This long awaited 3G smartphone packs some nice connectivity features: Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS/HSDPA 7.2Mbps, WiFi b/g. It also has integrated GPS navigation and runs Windows Mobile 6.1 alongside a 3 Megapixel camera, a 2.46” touch screen, and finally, a QWERTY keyboard. The first impression: it is a bit bulkier, and heavier than my BlackBerry Curve.

I like the calendar and email buttons that gives me direct access to the two applications that I use the most on my phone (email & calendar). Switching from and to those applications takes more time on the BlackBerry. This device called the “Business Messenger” is targeted to international business customers, and the stylish non-sexy design reflects that. At first sight, the keyboard seems to have keys that are too close to each other, but their curved design allows a really good experience, I type as fast with it as I do on my BlackBerry Curve. Browsing the interface is made easier by having a 5-way navigation button in the center and a scroll wheel on the side. I could not test the GPS navigation because it was deactivated, I will update this review once I get to use a different Sim Card.

Since HP is pushing user-generated content, I played a bit with the camera and the HP PhotoSmart Mobile application that lets the user to view pictures, rotate them, zoom-in them (using the touch screen), organize photos in folders, print them wirelessly and add text and voice comments to each picture. I shot photos with both the BlackBerry Curve and the HP iPaq 910c simultaneously, and the iPaq shutter is way too slow in comparison: this is not a good device for live blogging during keynotes. The Curve does not have 3G though…

The touch screen is too small to be really fun to use (except for zooming in the photos) and many times, the icons were hard to click-on with the finger (I did not see a stylus in the package either).

In conclusion: the connectivity is great, but this device is a bit bulky and heavy in comparison to the current market offerings. The touch screen needs to be larger and to do so, HP could sacrifice one key row to make some room (the one with the email and the calendar keys).

“Hikaru” 8 Migapixel Camera With 8GB Memory Phone By Sony Ericsson

Are you ready to forget the Xperia X1? Probably not, but listen up here: Sony Ericsson is getting ready to release a new touchscreen handset that will bring 8GB of internal memory and an 8 Megapixel camera.

This handset’s codename is Sony Ericsson Hikaru and, according to the SEMC Blog, it will be the next high-end slider of the Swedish-Japanese manufacturer.

For the moment, it’s not clear where Hikaru will fit into Sony Ericsson’s range of products. Will it be a Walkman, a Cyber-shot, or perhaps a G-series? Who knows?

Also, it’s not clear if it will have an alphanumeric or a QWERTY keyboard, but I guess any of these two would be nice to have, together with the phone’s supposedly large touchscreen display.

Since there’s no image with the real Sony Ericsson Hikaru, I’ve played around a bit and made a mockup of it, based on SE’s W960 model. Here it is:

The official Hikaru most probably doesn’t look like this. Let’s hope it will actually look better.

Apart from Hikaru, a Sony Ericsson Twiggy is also said to come next year. It will be the successor of W350, thus it’s a Walkman phone.

Sony Ericsson Twiggy will have a 240 x 320 pixels display, a 3 MP camera and two color versions. It should be on sale starting the second quarter of 2009. No image with it yet.

Samsung Introduces “EPIX” Smartphones For AT&T

The BlackJack series was a turning point for Samsung and solidified their place in the smartphone market among the major players until RIM got all fussy about the name and today they announced the Epix, which is basically the BJ III.

Stilll rocking Windows Mobile 6.1 the Epix ditches that obnoxious scroll wheel for an optical mouse. A handful of us at CG have seen it and it works quite well. You can also switch it to a four-way nav pad if you’re feeling old school. Or you can peck away at the screen using your phalange or use the built-in stylus. The Epix also comes with Wi-Fi, aGPS, 2-megapixel camera (video), AT&T’s video share and everything else the BlackJack 2 does. If you’ve got a 32GB microSD then drop that sucker in.

T9 Smartphones Surface, HP’s Next-Gen touch

HP has already tipped its hand as to its upcoming smartphone plans through a pair of leaks to its own website. Confirming longstanding rumors, the iPAQ Data Messenger will be HP’s first full touchscreen phone but will hide a slide-out QWERTY keyboard underneath its 2.8-inch display. It should also stand as HP’s most advanced phone yet with 7.2Mbps HSDPA-based 3G, albeit only on non-American bands in the current model, and will also support HSUPA for faster uploads on those networks that support it. A 3.1-megapixel camera, assisted GPS and Wi-Fi are also planned for the phone, which expectedly runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. The simpler iPAQ Voice Messenger should contain all the 3G, photography, GPS and Wi-Fi features of its Data sibling but in a conventional smartphone shape, with a BlackBerry SureType-style key layout and a 2.4-inch non-touch display. Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard will also come onboard.

Reports outside of the product pages have both smartphones due in mid-to-late November and shipping through Vodafone UK at unsubsidized prices of £333 ($570) for the Voice Messenger and £399 ($683) for the flagship Data Messenger. The two are expected to also appear in HP’s home country at a later date but haven’t been given official launch information outside of Britain.

To Hit Smartphones Soon By Firefox Browser

Mozilla has been ruminating about a mobile version of Firefox for a while. Now it looks like it’s starting to gear up for a launch of a test version of the software in the very near future.

CEO, John Lilly, expects alpha protoypes to be coming out in a few weeks, but in the meantime, screenshots taken from an unknown Windows Mobile device have surfaced. It’s already shaping up nicely and when it’s launched it will hopefully make default mobile phone web browsers take a long hard look at themselves, before keeling over in embarrassment.

Right now, the superb Opera Mini leads the way in mobile browsing thanks to its excellent compression techniques, swift download speeds and user-friendly interface. Arguably, Firefox Mobile can’t really hope to better it significantly, but that has never held it back in the mainstream browser market either. Although purists will swear by Opera, Firefox versions have always included a healthy amount of inspiration ‘borrowed’ from Opera, coupled with some neat ideas of their own. We hope the same will be true here.

The same values that have seen Firefox shoot to stardom on proper computers could really help Firefox Mobile too - the mobile platform will open up new opportunities for mobile browser add-ons and the fact that it is open-source and completely free will help it build up a user base. Who knows, it may even replace default browsers in handsets someday.

The ongoing build up of information behind it seems to point to a pre-Xmas release of some kind of prototype build, possible even a beta that we can all try out. At the moment, it’s expected to be compatible with Windows Mobile, but we’ll be hoping for Symbian and other versions too. We doubt Apple would be too happy about releasing a Safari competitor onto its tightly controlled Phone App platform, but we’ll be keeping an eye out.
