    iMafia….. Social Game For iPhone

With their reliance on social networks and their ‘leftfield’ monetisation methods, the Mob would have felt right at home in the 21st Century world of Web 2.0..

Now PlayMesh is seeking to straddle the mobster/mobile 2.0 divide with iMafia, an innovative gangster game.

According to Venture Beat, iMafia takes the basic social gameplay of online titles like Mob Wars, leverages social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and adds a clever twist to enable PlayMesh to profit from a game given away for free on the App store.

It works like this: PlayMesh has produced several other iPhone games, such as Chess Puzzles, iType and Speed Shapes. Originally free, these are now being replaced by premium versions.

iMafia players who buy and play the developer’s other games can earn points in them to spend in the gangster game.

PlayMesh says it will open up its system to other developers, too, which could potentially create a shadow network of virtual cross-game payments in the iPhone ecosystem.

Quite what the Godfather, Apple, would make of that is an open question. The convoluted procedure is necessitated because Apple protects its 30 per cent cut by banning overt virtual goods models, in order to stop developers creating free apps and selling upgrades outside of the App store for 100 per cent of the profits.

We’ve already seen a few screens and sketches, but LG’s new VX9600 (or Versa) has proven to be pretty camera shy for a phone with so much to show off — until now, that is. Those pics above come courtesy of HowardForums member Snap315, who also has a few more available for your perusal at the link below. The standout here, as you can see, is the detachable QWERTY keyboard module, which is just one of a number of promised detachable modules for the phone, including a gamepad, a pair of speakers, and an internet module with integrated WiFi. Unfortunately, there’s still no word on a release date, but these pics would seem to suggest that it’ll be coming sooner rather than later.

    First 3G HSDPA Wrist Phone | LG-GD910

LG representative showed us the company’s new GD910 touchscreen watch phone. Sporting features that even Dick Tracy and James Bond never had access to, the new GD910 tries to offer nearly full featured phone functionality inside a very compact wrist watch form factor.

A swipe gesture based touchscreen user interface allows users to move from screen to screen easily, and cool tech like HSDPA data, speech to text/text to speech, and a music player round out the relatively complete feature set. The GD910 supports both regular Bluetooth headsets as well as stereo Bluetooth headphones, and can even manage 3G video calls. The GD910’s touchscreen display measures 1.43" across the diagonal, and the entire device weighs only 85g.

Because of the demo model’s pre-production status, we were unable to show you some of the navigation and transition screen effects in the video below, but we can tell you that everything seemed to work quite speedily and smoothly.

LG has yet to reveal complete pricing and availability information for the GD910, but the company did hint that the device would likely show up in European markets first.

Impressions By Zumobi | Xbox Updates On BlackBerry

We gave you a brief sneak peak during WES in May, but today is the day Zumobi has officially announced their free mobile widget application for BlackBerry. What exactly is a mobile widget application? Look at it this way: the power of the smartphones in the hands of the BlackBerry Nation gives us the ability to update our Facebook, check out cool Flickr images, and maybe even read BlackBerry Cool (ahem), all while on the go. However, tricking out your BlackBerry in such a fashion usually requires a bit of work, or at least a handful of applications. Zumobi gives you the power to do all this and more in one application, using a slick graphical interface of 16 widgets (or ’tiles’ as Zumobi likes to call them) to place all the mobile content you want on one pretty little screen.

Zumobi was kind enough to give us an advance build, as well as an instructional video which should give you a better feel of how the application works. You can find our initial impressions and the video after the jump. Stay tuned tomorrow for the full review, as well as some special prizes we have in store for you on Zumobi’s behalf.

Zumobi offers a lot of tiles to start off. Like 200 tiles a lot. Suffice it to say, we haven’t checked them all out yet.

-> If you can’t find what you’re looking for in Zumobi’s default offerings, however, you have the option of creating your own tile using their web interface and sending it to your BlackBerry. Just upload the proper RSS feed and you’re ready to go. Cool.

-> The number/quadrant-based interface may take awhile to get used to for those more familiar with rolling their scroll ball every which way, but it’s actually quite effective. Before long we were navigating tiles like a pro.

-> Do not, I repeat, DO NOT INSTALL ZUMOBI WITH AN SD CARD IN YOUR BLACKBERRY. I did and I encountered a bug that basically puts the application in a ‘feedback loop of doom’, requiring you to uninstall and start over (Zumobi is working to fix the issue). Once the application is loaded however, feel free to pop your card back in.

-> Zumobi is a fairly graphic — and thus resource — intensive application. Testing on a BlackBerry Pearl 8100 was manageable, but the ride was much smoother on my BlackBerry 8330 (hey, RAM makes a difference). What’s interesting, however, is imagining how sweet Zumobi will look on the BlackBerry Bold or the Thunder. Mmmmmmm.

-> One neat aspect of Zumobi that surprised us was the ability to send tiles via email to your friends, much like Facebook apps. It’s interesting to think how Zumobi could become the ‘next cool thing’ discovery medium for BlackBerry users.

-> Speaking of Facebook, the Facebook tile was a little wonky while I was testing it, preventing me from updating my status, but Zumobi has told me it should be fixed by the time you’re reading this.

-> Generally speaking, BIS users should see a slightly faster Zumobi experience than BES users.

-> Right now BlackBerry users don’t have the ability to discover and add tiles from their device (boo!), but using Zumobi’s web gallery via a desktop browser was a painless experience.
